We are currently planning a Sashing/Honouring Ceremony. While we are still in the preliminary planning stages of this project, it promises to become an event which will ingrain itself upon the hearts and spirits of the local Métis population.
It has become increasingly evident to us that a significant portion of our children are not only becoming disconnected from origin families (via the Child Welfare system) but also from their Métis identity and culture. This fills us with an overwhelming sense of urgency and deeply rooted desire to support our children and families in the discovery or reclamation of their diverse and proud Métis heritage.
Over the next several months, we will be collecting oral and visual histories from Elders, to be documented and preserved via video media. A "Homecoming" kit is to be created to include a DVD containing Elder contributions and will be offered in conjunction with a ceremony to sash every Métis child adopted or currently in care of MCFD in the Prince George are.
Additionally, we will be conducting a sashing ceremony to honor participants of our "Warrior Support Group” and “Circle of Life” programs. These participants will have loyally attended the 16 weeks of the program and exemplify foundational components of respective programs which include; resiliency, honor, humility and openness.
Stay tuned for more information!
